When ordering springs, please specify torsion from extension springs. Torsion springs are mounted above your door and have a metal tube through the center of them. Extension springs are in a system of cables and pulleys, usually parallel to the horizontal tracks supporting your door. For a torsion spring, I will need the total length of the spring, not the cones on the end, but just the coil length only, I need the inside Diameter, I need the width in inches of 20 coils to determine wire size and last I will need the Handing which is determined by the chart on our <a href="http://garage-doors-and-parts.com/PDF/spring-specifications.pdf" target="_blank">Spring Specification Chart</a> For extension springs, I need you to lift your door all the way up above normal where your springs are drooping and secure it safely with vice grips in the track or some other source. Then carefully remove the good spring and the broken spring, get someone to help you put your door down on the ground and get a non-digital scale and lift the door just enough to slide the scale underneath and get the weight of the door. Measure the height of the door. With both please call in and supply this information and we then can provide you with the correct springs. The reason on extension springs we don’t use the color codes! I will use brown for instance. Brown means 60 pounds, with that the spring would be: 60, 160, 260 and 360 all have a brown paint score on it. This is why we ask you to dead weight the door for us, over the years the weight can change on the door, layers of paint, added decorations and so on. The extension springs have to be within 5 pounds of the actual weight of the door. Common Questions asked about spring replacement: 1) Do I replace both springs or just the broken one?
